North Carolina

North Carolina consists of 48,843 square miles of land and 3,826 square miles of inland water.  The Old North State lies on the Eastern Seaboard with half of the population of the United States living within a 500-mile radius of the state. The state's temperate climate has four distinct seasons and is highly acclaimed for its year-round living comforts. Rainfall is adequate and dispersed over the entire year.

This beautiful state has the Blue Ridge Mountains in the west, the Outer Banks (a chain of islands) in the east, and everything in between.   More...
  Getting Around

The Inner Beltline is composed in mostly of fashionable older neighborhoods and the NC State University area. This clash between "Town" and "Gown" has been of growing concern during the late 1990s early 2000's. The North Raleigh neighborhoods are aligned along what Raleigh residents refer to as the "Spokes of the Wheel," major thoroughfares emanating from the I-440 Loop and terminating along the northern edge of the still under construction I-540 loop.

Downtown Raleigh provides easy travel and access through its grid of one-way streets. If you're   More...

If you are traveling to Wilmington from the south via I-95 N, or from the direction of Charlotte, you should take US 74 E   More...

  Getting Around

By bus

There is a bus system, Wave Transit, which runs buses, shuttles, and a downtown motorized trolley, but service is limited. The base fare (as of January 2, 2006) for a one-way trip on any of the Wave Transit options is $1.00. There are a few other paid transportation methods in downtown Wilmington: you can ride on an authentic 3-tiered riverboat, the Henrietta III, or take a water taxi across the Cape Fear River to visit the WWII warship, Battleship North Carolina, but these are of extremely limited use in traveling around town.

Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, North Carolina is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). UNC-CH is the oldest public university in the United States, chartered in 1789 and opened to the first student (Hinton James, who, legend says, walked here from Wilmington) in 1795. According to the 2000 census, its population is 48,715.

With a liberal arts college at its heart, Chapel Hill is truly a "college town". Full of professors, students, and professionals from the nearby Research Triangle Park, it is also considered one of the most liberal towns in   More...
